Mathematical statistics is the application of probability theory, a branch of mathematics, to statistics, as opposed to techniques for collecting statistical data.

Statistics is the science which deals with the collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data. In singular form, statistics is taken as subject and in plural form, it means data.
