HK police call for protesters to leave university

HK police call for protesters to leave university (20 Nov 2019) Hong Kong police are appealing for the remaining protesters holed up in the Polytechnic University to "give up their weapons and leave the school in an orderly manner."

A small group of protesters are refusing to leave the university because they would face arrest.

They are holdouts from hundreds who took over the campus for days.

Hong Kong Police Force Chief superintendent Ho Yeung-Sing, District Commander of Yau Tsim district, spoke to media on Wednesday with a message for the remaining protesters.

"We can assure you that anyone who leaves the school in a peaceful manner will be safe and have fair treatment," he said.

Those who were underage would have "special arrangements" made for them and as long as they leave and give up their weapons they would not be arrested, said Ho.

"But of course, we will reserve the right to pursue their case later," he said.

Ho said around 300 people under the age of 18 had been removed from the university and have had their details recorded, while around 700 other protesters have been arrested.

He said police would take no further action and would wait for the remaining protesters to leave the campus themselves.
