German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier called Tesla's decision to build a major battery and assembly plant near Berlin a "tremendous success" during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday, just a week after the government agreed to increase cash subsidies for electric vehicles.
"The fact that Germany has managed to get the deal is very good news. Firstly, because it will create additional workplaces in Germany. Secondly, the automobile industry in Germany will increase in value," Altmaier said, adding "we experience a milestone in the expansion of electric mobility and battery expertise."
Answering the question whether the German government had offered any financial support to Tesla, Altmaier stated: "so far, subsidies haven’t been discussed."
"Tesla will be treated the same way as all other companies in the automobile and automotive industry... equally and without discrimination," he continued.
On Tuesday, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk announced plans to build 'Gigafactory 4' as well as another engineering and design centre located in the Berlin area during an award show in the German capital.
