All the single mayors? Mayor de Blasio and his wife stopped regularly wearing their wedding rings a few years ago – but that doesn’t mean there’s trouble brewing at Gracie Mansion. Advertisement The mayor and first lady Chirlane McCray don’t usually don the bands anymore because the stones in them get damaged when they wear them in the shower or get them wet, de Blasio’s office told The Daily News. McCray also forgoes her ring because she shakes hands more often now that she’s first lady – and the band hurt her when someone squeezed too hard. “Like many happily married couples, the mayor and first lady don’t need their rings to remind them of their devotion to one another,” de Blasio spokeswoman Freddi Goldstein said. De Blasio has said his wedding band is a “Native American Zuni Indian ring” that the couple bought last minute on the day before their 1993 nuptials. The perpetually tardy mayor was also reportedly late to the wedding ceremony. “It was the day before our wedding and Chirlane and I had not been able to find a ring we found interesting enough to wear, with all due respect to other types of rings,” de Blasio said in 2014. “We went to a store in Greenwich Village and it was about to close – and it was the last store we could get to.” “We're looking around – great planning, here – we're looking around, and this multi-stone – different kinds of stones – Zuni Indian ring, screamed out to us at the very last moment,” he continued. “It was meant to be. And I love my ring. And I love my wife.” De Blasio and McCray met at City Hall in 1989 when they both worked for former Mayor Dinkins. They celebrated their 25th anniversary this May.
