White House officials revealed on Tuesday that nearly 1 million migrants were arrested at the US-Mexico border during the 2019 fiscal year, one of the highest figures on record.Border agents arrested 977,509 people between October 1, 2018, through September 30, 2019, according to Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan said during a White House briefing. That number is up 88 percent from last year and is the highest total of arrests since 2007. Morgan called the increase 'staggering'. 'These are numbers no immigration system in the world is designed to handle,' he told reporters.   He also said the number of migrants encountered at the southern US border declined in September for the fourth straight month.Border officials came across about 52,000 migrants at the border last month - down about 65 per cent from the peak in May of about 144,000, Morgan said. That number includes both people who have crossed between borders illegally and people who sought admission into the US at an official port of entry but were deemed inadmissible.According to Morgan, daily apprehensions were close to 5,000 and today, 'it's below 1,700'. The number of migrants crossing the border traditionally declines in hot summer months. Numbers tend to rebound when the weather gets cooler, though officials have insisted that the decline cannot be explained simply by seasonal factors.Morgan said the administration's strategies have brought about results. Those policies have included denying asylum to most migrants who crossed through another country to arrive at the US-Mexico border and sending more than 45,000 migrants back to Mexico to wait out their asylum claims.'This administration's strategies have brought about results, dramatic results,' Morgan said from the White House press briefing room.Fewer people are being held in custody at border facilities. Four months ago, it was about 19,000, a massive number when 4,000 was considered a crisis. Now it's just under 4,000, Morgan said. Most immigrants coming to the US are Central American families who ar
