The Meeting
We met at a coffee shop where we discussed their program and project requirements. This is the initial step to the architectural design process and is often called the pre-design phase. They shared with me their vision for their home. It is important to listen to your clients and ask them questions that will help you understand their project at a deeper level. Questions like "How do you want to feel when you walk in your house?" or "What's your morning routine?" will help you solve their problems.
The Site Visit
Seeing the site in person is an important part of the design process. It is important to take note of opportunities and challenges that you might face within the site. Google earth and photos can only tell you a part of the story. Being in the site will give you a better understanding of your "canvas".
Every great project is a result of a collaboration between the architect and the client. I appreciate my clients for allowing me to be a part of their project and for also allowing me to share this personal process to you guys.
My goal is to help demystify the profession and help people get familiar with what we do and hopefully see the value we offer as architects.
Let me know in the comments below if this is something you want to see more of.
Due to the personal nature of the project, I cannot share EVERYTHING about the project. My clients are supportive and understanding and is allowing me to share necessary information that I believe gets the point across. I'm sure you understand. :)
