This is an installation called “We Are One in the Different” I created while attending a Social Justice Intensive at Sarah Lawrence College. This investigative installation illustrates that everyone is inherently human. While we need to understand, respect, and engage with our outward differences and varying opinions and ideas, we must also learn to empathize with the person inside. I created the installation by photographing different individuals on the Sarah Lawrence Campus and asking them to write down three words they thought described their personalities inside their own drawing of a heart. I then superimposed the words over a painting of a real human heart and x-ray. Creating this installation was an integral part of my journey toward developing stronger empathy and understanding for others in addition to learning how to turn my ideas and plans into a larger finished piece.
