It was given Vietnamese lyrics by Phạm Duy (October 5, 1921 – January 27, 2013) with the title Remember Me. In 1991, Nhat Ngan also re-wrote it with the title Rain on the Deserted Sea, which became more popular with the public. Nhat Ngan, (November 24, 1942 - January 21, 2012), was a Vietnamese musician, well known in the 1960. He married in 1969 and had 3 children. After 1975, Nhat Ngan was banned from performing but still composed the popular song "Do you free me or do I free you?". He fled Vietnam for Thailand in 1982, and was sponsored and settled by singer Thanh Thuy in the United States in 1984. Later, his wife and children joined him, but after only 19 months, he developed stomach cancer. Nhat Ngan recovered after surgery and lived for 20 more years until the cancer returned. He wrote over 200 songs, and translated more than 400 foreign songs into Vietnamese.
Ngọc Lan was born Maria Lê Thanh Lan on 28 December 1956 in Nha Trang. She was the 5th child of 12. She studied at Ly Thuong Kiet School, Saigon, and occasionally performed in Nha Trang. In 1980, Ngọc Lan settled in the United States, first in Minnesota, singing for weddings and parties with a local band. With singer Duy Quang, she sang at several music cafes and performances. At first, with money short, she considered quitting her singing career, and sell hamburgers because she felt that her voice box limited how often she could sing, but she persevered. To avoid confusion with famous singer Thanh Lan, she chose the stage name, Ngoc Lan ("Jade Orchid") In 1982, she moved to California and began recording for various music production labels. Promoter Ngoc Chanh offered her an exclusive contract to sing at the Ritz Nightclub in Anaheim. In 1986, she released her self-produced debut solo studio album. In the years that followed, she became one of the most popular overseas Vietnamese singers, presenting over 800 songs and over 40 video clips. The latter restricted by her shy nature. She had huge success in Australia where ahe constantly received beautiful pink roses from the audiences. Her humble personality endeared her to audiences.
In 1992, Ngoc Lan took a break from performing due to the sudden death of her sister, along with her own personal health matters which she had kept private from her public. She reappeared in several shows during 1994. However, after one particular concert, the audience noticed that she was somewhat depressed, and her singing was less flexible than usual. She married Kelvin Khoa later that year, and continued to sing but not as strongly as before. In 1998, Ngoc Lan made her last appearance. After a long period of multiple sclerosis and limited vision, Ngoc Lan passed away at 8:25 am on 06 March 2001 at Vencor Hospital, Huntington Beach, Southern California. Her funeral was one of the most attended ever. Shortly after, several songs were written to commemorate a very special lady. Bless you Ngọc Lan. is excellent
Lyrics
