Sixteen-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg is taking part in a climate demonstration set to take place in front of the UN headquarters, in New York City, on Friday, August 30.

Called ‘Fridays for Future,’ the demo is part of a global movement taking place in around 1,700 cities in more than 100 countries, aimed at pushing world leaders into acting on climate change.

Thunberg travelled from Plymouth, UK to NYC on board a sail-powered zero-carbon emissions yacht, in journey that took 15 days, and is expected to attend the UN Climate Action Summit, set to take place in mid-September.

The Swedish student, who became a global icon for her activism, gained fame in August 2018 after she skipped school to sit down outside the Swedish parliament with a sign reading ‘skolstrejk for klimatet’ in her native Swedish, which translates to ‘school strike for climate’ in English.

Her strike reverberated around the world and set off a global movement of student demonstrations to highlight the urgency of the climate crisis, which inspired the ‘Fridays for Future’ protest.
