I will limit my comment to the part "I know the treasure chest is wet." This was a spoken interview. What if he meant W-H-E-T instead of W-E-T? The dictionary defines "whet" (noun - archaic) as "a thing that stimulates appetite or desire." Literally, Forrest Fenn could have been saying "the treasure chest is a thing that stimulates desire." Hard to argue with that, won't you say?

Then we also have the explanation of the chest being wet related to the temperature reached during the casting of the bronze chest!

Last but not least, wet can be taken to mean that the chest is wet due to the moisture of soil or its surroundings and also from the fine drops of splattered water of a nearby waterfall.
