#6 Playa Zipolite
Located in Mexico, it’s famous for retaining the hippie atmosphere that was established in the 1970s. The beautiful beach attracts plenty of tourists, many of whom want to swim in the clear waters. But caution is strongly advised for those who do so. Strong currents can push swimmers towards the shore, and they can also pull them out to sea. Swimmers often drowned until a lifeguard service was established, and more than 200 rescues have been documented. Did you know that the nickname for this place is “the Beach of the Dead”? It sounds like a reference to the dangerous waters. But that’s the way it was translated from an indigenous language.

#5 Horseshoe Lake, California
You’ll find this picturesque body of water located more than 6,500 feet high (1,996 m) near the town of Mammoth Lakes. The scenery is amazing, but there’s a huge caveat. Since the late 1980s, higher than normal concentrations of carbon dioxide gas have discharged from the ground. The excessive amounts of CO-2 are thought to have killed some 120 acres of trees in the region. Experts think that earthquakes may have ruptured a gas reservoir beneath Mammoth Mountain, which created channels allowing the lethal carbon dioxide to seep out.

#4 Hanakapiai Beach, Hawaii (han-nah-kah-pee-eye)
There’s beautiful scenery in this location that is so remote there’s no access by road.
The two-mile stretch of beach (3.2 km) is best experienced in the summer. During winter the shore line is washed away by dangerous high tides and powerful waves. Those forces have combined to cause numerous fatalities. When swimmers have been caught in rip currents, the nearest shore is some six miles distant (10 km). Most sources estimate at least thirty drowning deaths have occurred here. Unofficial sources place that number at more than eighty!

#3 New Smyrna Beach, Florida (SMUR-nuh)
Sharks have long been known to attack humans here while they swim or surf in the Atlantic Ocean. It happens so often that this location is sometimes called the ‘shark attack capital of the world’. There’s good reason for that because this region has the most confirmed shark bites worldwide. In 2016, three different surfers were bitten by sharks at the same beach over the span of a few hours! It’s not uncommon to see spinner, tiger, and blacktip sharks in the waters of New Smyrna Beach.

#2 Cape Tribulation, Australia
This area is located in the Daintree National Park of Queensland, and it’s well-named. Check out some of the potential dangers you can encounter here: You might expect crocodiles on the sand and venomous box jellies in the water. But there are also venomous snakes and cassowaries slithering and roaming about, respectively. Cassowaries are large, flightless birds that resemble emus or ostriches and can weigh more than 130 pounds (59 kg). They can be dangerous if provoked. And there are some dangerous trees at Cape Tribulation as well. The Stinging Tree is covered with fine hairs that contain a powerful poison. If one gets lodged in your skin it can cause an intense pain that lasts for months!
