Dangling Modifiers
A dangling modifier is a word or phrase that doesn’t actually modify the word it’s intended to modify.
There are six types of Dangling Modifiers
1. Disjunct Danglings:
All Prepositional phrases are at the beginning of the sentences to qualify in the wrong way.
E.g. Under the cold weather, the sun isn’t bright.
- With fearing of economics, emigration merged up remarkably.
- Unlike most birds, the head and neck of vulture lack features.
- According to pop concert performing, goods become expired.
2. Adjectival Danglings
All adjectival phrases are at the beginning of the sentences to qualify in the wrong way.
- Intelligent and attentive, the class of the 20 students was admired.
- So delicious of all, Mary cooks food for us in the banquet.
- Full of sophisticated experience, the lesson sharpens students well.
- Undereducated and also overeducated, autocracy can’t be developed.
3. Past Participial Danglings
All Past Participial Verbs are at the beginning of the sentences to quality in the wrong way.
- killed for a good business, beef is the popular product in the market.
- Arrested by corps, the building where trafficker conceals drug is combed.
- Treated attentively, the doctor feels so tired of many patients
- Written with great concept, the piano is used in the contest.
4. Present Participial Danglings
All Present Participial Verbs are at the beginning of the sentences to quality in the wrong way.
- Looking at the beautiful pictures, the art gallery is full of pictures.
- Checking for my mistakes, the electric for computer is outrageous.
- Climbing up the mountain, my head hit the big rock.
- Constructing steadily in the area, the hospital is needed abruptly.
5. Infinitival Danglings
All To-infinitival verbs are at the beginning of the sentences to qualify in the wrong way.
- To carry a giant jumbo, John feels humorous among his friends.
- To welcome her close friends, the food was organized in the party.
- To overcome the drunkard husaband, quarrelsome causes a violence.
6. Adverbial Clause Danglings.
All adverbial clauses are at the beginning of the sentences to qualify in the wrong way.
- While reading the newspaper, my dog sat with me on the front steps.
- When shaving in front of the steamy mirror, my phone was ringing on the table.
- After teaching ten students at home, my car was taken to the city.
