Cardiogenic shock is a condition in which your heart suddenly can't pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. The condition is most often caused by a severe heart attack, but not everyone who has a heart attack has a cardiogenic shock. Cardiogenic shock is rare, but it's often fatal if not treated immediately. If treated immediately, about half the people who develop the condition survive.

The most common cause of cardiogenic shock is a heart attack. Other health problems that may lead to cardiogenic shock include heart conditions such as heart failure; chest injuries; medicine side effects; and conditions that prevent blood from flowing freely through your heart, such as a blood clot in the lungs. Without oxygen-rich blood reaching the body’s brain and other vital organs, your blood pressure drops, your pulse slows, and you may experience confusion, loss of consciousness, sweaty skin, and rapid breathing.
