BOATERS IN PERIL Father and son rescued from the jagged rocks at entance to Sanwich Harbor BOATERS IN PERIL: Father and son rescued from the jagged rocks at entrance to Sandwich Harbor... [DRAMATIC HN FOOTAGE]

SANDWICH – At around 3:00 a.m. this morning, Sandwich Police and Firefighters were alerted to a boat that had crashed onto the jagged rocks at the entrance to Sandwich Harbor.

The wind was whipping and the two boaters, a father and son, were in peril.

The first challenge rescuers faced was finding their way out to the scene. At first, police officers did not think it was possible to reach the stranded boaters, calling on the Coast Guard to assist from the water at the entrance of the harbor... which would have been treacherous due to strong currents and steady winds...

As you will see in the following HN Footage, two Sandwich Police Officers hiked at least half a mile across the dark shore to get within earshot of the stranded pair.

The boat was actively being tossed into the rocks... and officers tried to advise the father and son to remain on the boat for the time being...

… but the father apparently did not hear the officers and was fortunately able to lift his son and himself safely onto the slippery rocks. Police officers then ventured out onto the rocks to help the castaways onto the beach.

The father told HN that he was new to boating and the anchor had let loose when they had fallen asleep. As we were walking back along the long stretch of beach toward an awaiting ambulance, the father said that the anchor had somehow become stuck in the rocks, making it impossible to back the vessel out away from the rocks. The boat was essentially tethered to the rocks and being knocked about by the steady wind and waves...

Both father and son were evaluated inside a Sandwich Rescue ambulance and both checked out okay. They were then taken back to their car at the Sandwich Marina... [DEVELOPING – No further information available at time of this report...]
