University Hospital RWTH Aachen - Department of Intensive Care Medicine

University Hospital RWTH Aachen - Department of Intensive Care Medicine Back to Life: Innovation and Quality in Intensive Care.

The Department of Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital RWTH Aachen is as a multi-disciplined ICU team enhancing the care of critically ill patients by driving innovations into clinical reality, working to be the pacemaker for future ICU development with enthusiasm, respect, and empathy.

The department provides clinical services for over 5000 critically ill patients per year including cardiothoracic, trauma, liver transplant, burns, and neurosurgical patients. We have a special unit for long-term ventilated patients. At the same time, they are running a 24/7 telemedicine ICU-service across a network of 17 hospitals throughout the region.

The aim is to deliver every day excellent care for patients with competence and the highest quality standards – recognising this, the quality of the department’s clinical service has been certified by the German Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. Central to this is training, developing each team member up to the very best according to their individual potential and strengths. The team provides an immersive experience in special clinical training programs including state-of-the-art simulation facilities and mentoring services.

At the same time, basic research focused on inflammation and sepsis is resulting in clinically relevant results, new patents, and start-ups. The focus of the department is on the translation of these results into the clinical setting. Also driving this is the innovation center of digital medicine, where staff are exploring the potential of artificial intelligence and digital medicine to define the future of intensive care and bring it to patients today.
