Half of Americans are now over 38 as median age increases by a year The median overall age in the U.S. increased by one year to 38.2 years between 2010 and 2018, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday. Experts attribute the upward shift in the age of Americans to the large number of baby boomers - Americans born between the end of World War Two and the Beatles' American invasion in 1964 - hitting the retirement mark of age 65 within the past eight years.The nation is aging — more than 4 out of every 5 counties were older in 2018 than in 2010,' Luke Rogers, the chief of the Population Estimates Branch at the Census Bureau, said. 'Now, half of the U.S. population is over the age of 38.2.'But while the overall median age has gone up, current age statistics vary across races and from state to state within the US.The only state whose median age got younger was North Dakota, dropping from 37 years in 2010 to 35.2 years in 2018. While the overall median age has gone up, current age statistics vary across races and from state to state within the US. People who identify as part of the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone-or-in-combination population showed the most change, with a median age that increased by 2.6 years. A chart showing distribution of age broken down by race and Hispanic origin is shownWith the white population remaining the largest group in the nation at 78.9 percent (258,080,572), and had the largest increase from 2017 to 2018 (1,055,588), the white alone-or-in-combination population fell in line with the overall data, showing a median age increase by 1 year from 2010 to 2018.The Black or African American alone-or-in-combination population skewed slightly older, with an increase in median age of 1.4 years.The median age of people identifying as Asian alone-or-in-combination increased by 1.7 years. The American Indian and Alaska Native alone-or-in-combination population, along with the Hispanic (any race) population, both increased their median ages by 2.2 years.  And the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone-or-in-combination population showed the most change, with a median age that increased by 2.6 years.   The data released by the Census Bureau didn't clarify whether these changes were from the overall median age of 37.2 in 2010, or from
