Russian troops have begun to receive the most sophisticated 2G25 'Gull' mortar, a source in the defense industry told TASS on Tuesday. "Silent mortar shipments of 2B25 to troops have begun. Especially, special purpose units received several dozen such mortars recently. During its operation, Gull proved its value as an easy-to-operate and reliable weapon, which is actually hidden," said the source.
The 2B25 mortar was able to quietly destroy the target at a distance of more than 1 km, the source added.
2B25 mortar shipments to the Russian Army will resume, said the source, without providing other details.
Russia will then do its job to increase silent mortar, the source noted. "At present, specialists are studying the possibility of developing smaller caliber mortars, perhaps, 60mm rifles that can attack targets at distances of up to 3.5-4 km."
The 82mm 2B25 'Gull' mortar has been developed by Burevestnik Central Research and Development Institute (part of the Uralvagonzavod defense manufacturer in the Rostec high-tech company). The characteristics of the mortar mentioned indicate that it is capable of attacking targets at distances up to 1,200 m and with a shot speed of 15 revolutions per minute. 2B25 is currently the only silent mortar in the world arms market.
