Mason High School to do away with valedictorians and salutatorians

Mason High School to do away with valedictorians and salutatorians MASON, Ohio (WKRC) - 2019 will be the last year that Mason High School recognizes its best and brightest as valedictorian and salutatorian. School officials are doing away with those designations to improve students' mental wellness.

Instead, the school will use the Latin honors system. Students will earn summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude honors instead. It will be based on GPA.

Principal Bobby Dodd says students have been competing for valedictorian and salutatorian through class rank even though those honors aren't reported to colleges.

“We are moving to a recognition system eliminating valedictorian and salutatorian honors, and shifting to recognizing students who have achieved outstanding academic success through a multitude of pathways. The recognition system will reward our students for genuine academic success based on their academic accomplishments. This will help reduce the overall competitive culture at MHS to allow students to focus on exploring learning opportunities that are of interest to them,” explained Mason High School Principal Bobby Dodd.

School staff are also revising the weighted credit system and they're looking into reducing the amount of homework and summer work.

Students at Mason High School and Mason Middle School will begin a half hour later next school year. These changes are all in an effort to improve student mental health.
