Deep Oceans - How They Enable Life | Mustafa Yücel | TEDxARUCAD Oceans drive life, control climate change and may fuel economic growth in the near future. With an average depth of over 4000 meters, about 95 per cent​ of the ocean volume is dark, cold and subject to high pressures. Despite these harsh conditions, one of the most productive and unique ecosystems establish on the deep-sea floor, especially along underwater mountain chains called 'mid-ocean ridges'. Here, energy-rich hydrothermal fluids are pumped into the deep ocean​, creating a chemical gradient on which chemosynthetic microbes thrive. In symbiosis with these microbes, various macroinvertebrates have specialised to transform the energy-rich abiotic chemical environment into a biodiversity and evolution hotspot that is currently becoming a real-world model for extraterrestrial life research. However, the deep-sea is not far from anthropogenic influences. The 21st century has already witnessed the start of natural gas extraction, mining and tapping of the genetic potential in and around deep-sea ecosystems. These developments highlight the emerging importance of deep-seas for a blue economy but also underline the need for integrated studies for ​deep-sea stewardship. Mustafa Yücel obtained his PhD in Oceanography from the University of Delaware, since when he has conducted post-doctoral research at UPMC-CNRS Benthic Ecogeochemistry Laboratory, France, been a Visiting Scientist at the National Oceanography Centre, UK followed by a period as a Postdoctoral researcher at GEOMAR│Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Germany. He has been an Assistant Professor at the Middle Eastern Technical University, Turkey. His research interests are the biogeochemistry of anoxic marine environments and deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems and the dynamics of sulfur-iron transformations across marine redox gradients.
