Back in 2017 with the release of the first generation of ryzen CPU’s, AMD made it clear that they didn’t want to be greedy. They wanted to be the good guys and allow their AM4 socket to be usable for as long as they possibly could. That meant that the basic B350 AM4 motherboard would support CPU’s all the way through 2020. All you would really need is to update the Bios when the time comes.
This is one of the reasons why I was so happy when I bought my B350 motherboard for my Ryzen 7 1700, because it should support Ryzen’s 3rd gen cpu’s too . But it looks like AMD isn’t the only one calling the shots and unfortunately, Some of us AM4 owners might need to upgrade earlier than we think.
Motherboard vendor MSI just confirmed that their 300 series motherboard wont make it all the way to ryzen 3000. An owner of a X370 Xpower Titanium MSI Motherboard contacted their support team to inquire about Zen 2, and they told him outright that they would not Extend support to the Next gen Ryzen 3000 CPUs.
There could be a few reasons for that and unfortunately other motherboard vendors might follow suit. An Anonymous source at a different Motherboard vendor told Tech Power up that Zen 2 has a Steeper electrical requirements and that the 300 series of motherboards just doesnt meet it. What I dont like about this statement is that this is the same excuse that Intel gave between the 100 and 200 series of motherboards. And that was bogus because we have proof that someone ran an overclocked 9900k at 5,5ghz on a Z170 board.
