Hiking Little Wild Horse And Bell Canyon Slots | Southern Utah Hikes | San Rafael Swell
Little Wild Horse Bell Canyon Trail is a 11.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Hanksville, Utah. It is a great hike if you want to get away for the weekend. We camped overnight in the BLM land next to Goblin Valley State Park. However camp sites are also available in the state park.
We got up early in the morning and started our hike making it through Little Wild Horse Canyon first. There are two ways to approach hiking here. Some people simply go into Little Wild Horse, hike as far as they feel comfortable and then return the way they came in. Other hikers hike through the Little Wild Horse Slot and make the loop back through Bell Canyon. Both slots are very spectacular but Little Wild Horse definitely is the more narrow of the two. We have hiked this hike both dry and wet. During the rainy season we hiked through pools deep enough to wade in. It is definitely not a good idea to hike any slot in rainy weather. Make sure to do your research and keep out of flash flood areas.
Both slots give you access to the beautifully eroded walls in the San Rafael Swell. Near the end of the narrows in Little Wild Horse, we encountered a small dry fall about 6 feet high. It was not too technical and we had no problem climbing to continue the route. From there the canyon opened up and we hiked a dry wash to make the loop to Bell Canyon. We dropped down into Bell Canyon, hiking down to the canyon junction. From there we continued down to the trailhead and our car. This is definitely a great introduction hiking to slot canyons. Since we started early in the day we were sheltered from the heat coming back down Bell Canyon. There are lot of picture opportunities and you can even take your fur babies along for the hike. Just make sure to clean up after them.
