First off, I was not interested in a Hellboy reboot. I love the original and didn't see much room for improvement. However the incredibly low Hellboy rotten tomatoes score and the fact that Neil Marshall directed Hellboy 2019 got me excited to see it. I love Marshall's films and thought he'd be a good fit for the Hellboy reboot. I also love the fact that it's rated R and very graphic compared to the PG-13 originals.
However, this movie is indeed a mess. It displays easily the worst CGI I've seen in the theater since the 90s and the storytelling is a mess. I did find a lot to love about it though which left me even more disappointed because I think Hellboy came close to being a cult classic midnight movie... unfortunately, even though Hellboy is a bad movie... it's not bad enough to be an enduring cult classic. It lacks the requisite amount of cheesy one liners and over the top gore to really stick. It came surprisingly close though.
